olive

My Mom recently told me a story about the death of her friends dog Olive. Even though it’s just a dog, they are very much a part of our families. I know when my two dogs die I will be an emotional mess. So when my Mom emailed me last week asking if I knew how to crop people out from photos I responded with confidence, knowing that I’ve only done this once or twice before. But I love a photoshop challenge and a chance to expand my skill set.

Below you will find the altered photos I created in photoshop followed by the original image. Olive is the yellow lab in the middle.

eric chase anderson

Brother of the inspiring filmmaker Wes, Eric Anderson displays the same sense of whimsical humor in his artwork as his brother does on film.

You are probably most apt to recognize his work for the covers of The Criterion Collection editions of:

Rushmore Criterion Collection Cover
The Royal Tenenbaums Criterion Collection Cover
The Life Aquatic Criterion Collection cover

But now you can add Bottle Rocket to that wonderful Criterion collection list.

Bottle Rocket Criterion Collection cover

Not due out until November 25, 2008 you can pre-order your copy today on The Criterion Collection website. I can’t wait to replace my original copy.

Also ,if interested, check out Eric’s book “Chuck Dugan is AWOL: A Novel with Maps” at your local bookstore or online retailer.

weekly update

In case you’ve been living under a rock or this is your first time here, you are now looking at the updated version of kylesteed.com. This past week I spent a great deal of time giving my site a much needed face-lift and sketching out the future of my presence on the web.

The best part about this make-over is I finally combined the power of WordPress with my site, thanks to Chris over at CSS-Tricks for his helpful video tutorials. So now instead of arriving at a static page you will come here, but you can still see examples of my work, find out who I am and contact me by using the simple nav bar up top.

To give you a little inside look at what’s in the future for me and this site I present you with a short unordered list:

  • improve the quality and creativity of each blog post
  • reach out to other designers, photographers and other creatives for interviews
  • publish a WordPress theme
  • eat more fruit

So there you have it, a quick update on the life of me, Kyle Steed. If you’re interested in having your work displayed on my site with a brief interview please contact me and we can discuss the specifics. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the new look and please subscribe to my feed for all updates and happenings going on at kylesteed.com.

Thanks!

james michael starr

MY CURRENT WORK holds the sombre and self-righteous vocabulary of assemblage at gunpoint, forcing it to serve the graphic, transient vernacular of contemporary visual culture. I’m interested in the contradictions: barely three-dimensional models of fleeting images we all seem to recognize – like old animated cartoons – but which we inexplicably feel we must now take seriously.” - statement from artists website

James is one of those people who you look at and just know there is something creative about them. I first met James back in 2002 at a church in Dallas. It was an unexpected friendship that turned out to be very inspiring. I can remember working with James at his historic loft in Deep Ellum with NPR’s All Things Considered playing on the radio. (I think that’s where I found my love of NPR.) Looking back now I am so grateful for the time James took to help mentor me and invest his time in my art. That type of selflessness is something I hope to one day be able to share with another young artist.

Even though it’s been more than 5 years since I’ve spent time with James those memories from the few months we spent time together are still treasured. Last I heard he is happily married and continues to work diligently in the collage and assemblage community. He just finished up a two month exhibition at the Conduit Gallery in Dallas during the months of June and July. If you are unfamiliar with James’ artwork please visit his website, jamesmichaelstarr.com, and fall in love with art all over again.
