Overview

The Chair and Microphone series from Enter the Worship Circle are as unique as each artist that is featured. I was honored to be a part of the creative process for Volume 4. Working with Ben Pasley and Tim Coons (the featured musician) was a joy. I had a ton of creative freedom right from the start. Some of you may remember the initial concept I posted on dribbble. Well that came from listening to some of the rough mixes of Tim's songs. I really felt a theme of surrender and water from Tim's music. The story of Moses parting the Red Sea kept coming to mind.

Based on the past three chair and microphone albums I knew everything had to be done by hand. And that made me feel all tingly inside. If you didn't know already, I'm a huge fan of the DIY/Hand-crafted style. So I started with some soft sketches on post-it notes and sketch books. After receiving feedback I moved into Illustrator and started my refining process. The whole project went pretty seamless and I'm very proud of how it all turned out.

The dribbble jersey collection

What is Dribbble?

Dribbble allows you to share your work in 120,000 pixels or less with other creative people. It poses the question, "What Are You Working On?" without sounding like a douche bag. The fine folks over at SimpleBits handcrafted this little beauty.

Why a Jersey?

Why not a jersey? It seemed appropriate in light of the whole basketball theme. Sure I could've made little basketball icons, but where's the fun in that. I love to compete, and what better to wear when you compete than a team jersey? You may have seen my post on twitter or even on dribbble already showing off my new "Gold Team" jersey. And that's where this whole idea started. I'm not saying let's all divide up in teams to compete to see who's better, no, I just want to have a bit of fun with my fellow designers. Similar to the design-off Chris Wallace and I had.

What Team Color are You?

Pick any color you want. Just know that I'm captain of the Yellow/Gold team. That's right, I appointed myself. And I'm happy to announce that Rogie King and Brad Colbow have suited up to join me.

The jersey collection comes in the 3 different sizes: 48x48, 32x32 and 16x16. I hope if you're on dribbble already you'll use them, and if you aren't well I hope you will still have fun with them. One last thanks to Dan at SimpleBits for crafting such a wonderful space for us to hang out.

Hymns

For Christmas this past year my wife recorded an album of 11 songs to send to my grandparents. So me being the awesome husband I am I created a custom album sleeve for her. Just a simple front and back design that would fit on an 8.5x11 template that we could assemble ourselves. By the way, if you're looking for a good resource for album cover templates I recommend checking out theses oasis cd templates. They came in quite handy.

So like all good projects, we started with a little brainstorming session and some quick sketches while we talked about what to title the cd. We settled on "HYMNS: by Amanda And Other Songs You Can Sing to Jesus".

After she decided on the design I went from sketch straight in to illustrator. I used a mixture of live trace (for all the hand-drawn type on the tracklist) and tracing the shapes by hand. As far as choosing a color palette, I wanted it to be something soft and wintery. I did have snow flakes in my initial design, but decided against them when it went to the printer. I think the light gray of the sky and the stark black silhouette of the trees and house do a good job of giving off that cold, winter-like feeling. And the North Star was icing on the cake.

Update

I forgot to post this link originally, but you can stream the entire album over on my wife's virb page.

Baptized Into Death

Baptized Into Death Tshirt Design for RedIsWhite.com Please vote for my design on RedIsWhite.com.

A Little Background

Chris Wallace and I had been talking about doing a t-shirt design competition, and how fun it would be to stir up some trash talking. Originally we planned on having a week to get our designs ready, but we ended up only having a few days.

The rules were simple, design a t-shirt based around a verse out of the book of Romans. Any verse we wanted. Next was to upload the design to RedisWhite.com and give the people a week to vote. At the end of the week whoever claims the victory will have their shirt printed and sold on RiW, as well as the chance to place something on the losers site for a month.

Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?" - Romans 6:3

This verse stood out amongst all the rest because of the visual appeal it has. The cryptic way it defines our new life in Christ as death. It's saying that while we were alive (in our flesh) when we come to Jesus Christ we must die and then God will raise us back up again. Just look at the next two verses:

"We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection." - Romans 6:4-5

I wanted to design the truth, not the obvious, so by placing the skull on the left it represents our flesh (death) and the face on the right represents the new life we have in Christ.
