Is what we see really our reality? How long do we sit and contemplate our lives to see beyond the material world? These questions were really working themselves through me as I spent a number of days stepping back, walking away, and even at times leaving this piece alone on the wall. I was interested in having the conversation as each new layer was formed.

The last piece of seeing the figure there seated, modeled after the way I will sometimes sit cross-legged, reminded me in an odd sort of way as that Francis Bacon self-portrait. Yet I wished to abstract and over-exaggerate the facial features. The grumpy kind of attitude. The bare teeth out ready to chomp. The gnarly looking hand. And the motion of the foot there, almost as if you can feel it bouncing up and down impatiently.
